We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling contemporary challenges. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being courageous, thinking freely, and innovating, we create a better future together, through both large and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on the foundations of knowledge graphs and virtual data integration.
Your Responsibilities
You will actively participate in and lead work within two complementary research projects on the foundations and techniques for querying federations of knowledge graphs, including views of knowledge graphs for heterogeneous types of data sources.
Depending on your expertise and preferences, your work may focus on theoretical foundations for query languages and mappings in this context (e.g., formal results regarding fundamental properties of relevant languages) or on the development, implementation, and evaluation of efficient and scalable techniques for systems that process such queries (e.g., query optimization algorithms, methods for adaptive query processing). The research work will also include preparing scientific publications on the results.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily conduct research, but teaching may be included in the responsibilities up to a maximum of 20% of the working time. There will also be opportunities to supervise students.
Your Qualifications
To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a PhD or have a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a PhD. Your degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made.
Eligibility requirements include (all must be met):
- A strong research background in a field related to the work (e.g., databases, information systems, Semantic Web, Linked Data, knowledge representation), documented through scientific publications.
- Strong programming skills OR the ability to develop formal abstractions and prove formal results (or both).
- Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
The following qualifications are particularly meritorious:
- Scientific publications in prominent forums presenting similar types of work included in this position.
- Experience with Semantic Web technologies (RDF, SPARQL, SHACL, RML, etc.).
- Experience in programming in Java.
Your Workplace
The position is located at the Knowledge-Driven Data Management Lab (KDMLAB) at the Department of Computer Science at Linköping University. The department is one of the largest computer science departments in Northern Europe, with research covering a wide range of areas, from fundamental computer science to applied fields. KDMLAB is a newly established group currently consisting of two faculty members with extensive experience from another department within the institution, along with three PhD students.
The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor Olaf Hartig, a leading researcher in the field of Semantic Web and knowledge graph technologies, with nearly 20 years of experience in scientific research related to data management and query processing in decentralized environments. You will benefit from a broad international network of collaborators, and the results of your research will contribute to the ongoing development of HeFQUIN, a state-of-the-art open-source engine for federated query processing. To conduct experiments, you will have access to relevant computational infrastructure at the department as well as at the National Supercomputer Centre (NSC), which operates a data center on the university campus.
About the Employment
The position is a fixed-term employment for two years with the possibility of extension for a total employment period of no more than three years.
The postdoctoral position is full-time.
Start date according to agreement (preferably in spring 2026).
